Hmmmm - if a bud looked like this, would it concern you? I snipped the first onee off because I thought it was deformed. The cross is Demetria x Twilight.

Well, as I said I snipped the first budd, the second bud looked like that but I let it go & it turned into this -

It surprised me, the transformation in like 2days. There's things I like about it but it's bordering on bow wow. I was kinda wondering if there could be something culture related. The first time bloom was summer '08 & went in the GH to find the spike bent over with a brown spot at the fold. This summer was cool & cloudy, Oct. rainy, Nov. nice. The edges of the dorsal curl - not enough water? It's a big plant, in a big pot - water 2x a week.

I probably use epsom salts once a month. I do have quite a few phrags in spike, it will be interesting to see if they bloom any different.

Cool!

It has many good points, the intense color being one. I don't mind the bow, personnally and I find the real problem is the dorsal. The plant is also very nice and looks perfectly healthy. If you could grow it cooler most of the year, it might help. There seems to be less warping when plants grow cool. Leaves and blooms take more time to develop and generally look better. One other possibility is too much feeding, for about the same reasons. Plants grow faster yes but buds may have less time to develop correctly in their sheath. I sometimes have similar problems with masdevallias and it happens after feeding them too much. Hope that helps! ;)

Hi Rose,

Could be the result of excessive concentrations of the Mg ion found in epsom salts, but not 100% sure. With that stunning color, I'd sure keep it 'till it blooms again sans epsom salts, to see if that's the cause.

Cheers!

:rollhappy::rollhappy: Thanks Tom! So it's not as doggie as we talked? The color is beautiful & I love the spots on the inside of the pouch. I'm not crazy about the muscle man/bulldog/hug look of the petals but considering the cross, this is what one could get. I do have some browning of leaf tips, so it could be my culture. I'll let it keep it's space for another years. I'm putting a note on it - NO EPSOM SALTS, lite fert. & let's see if that helps!

It is nice!! I love the deep color and the spots in the pouch give it personality! Very interesting- the change in two days!

I'm confused. Was the first photo the one you snipped off?
No, actually that is the 3rd bud. The 1st one I snipped, the 2nd one I left & it developed into the flower you see in a matter of a couple of days. (Talk about the ugly duckling becoming a swan to some degree!). So I'm gonna assume this 3rd bud will produce a similar flower, we'll see. Have you had something like this happen with your phrags?

It will be interesting to see how your others bloom. The color on this is amazing -- I always thought color was an effect more of temperature, not fertilizer. But it's all an experiment, I think.

I guess the pouch was hidden by the lower petal in the 2nd flower.

Yes, they are constantly complaining that I don't give them enough light and unless I get them a HID system they will strangle me while I sleep!
