I think it's their Spring.

Those rose gardens look perfectly tended. No black spot, powdery mildew or faded petals. Wow!

I love roses, but won't grow them because I get tired of losin them to black spot. In your pictures they look so healthy. Nice gardens.

Nice, yo should visit there right after a rain to taste the 'rose-water' yummmm.

I believe the black spot is caused by a mold/bacteria that comes from water splattering up from the ground/soil. If you put a plastic barrier or ground cover or mulch you would reduce this!

Roses in fall and Cattleyas growing in the ground. Now I've seen everything :rollhappy:
Indeed...

I think it's their Spring.
Cattleya labiata is labelled as "Autumn Cattleya" maybe because it blooms in Autumn... and it is blooming at the same time as teh roses :poke: (just kidding :D there is no spring and autumn in Malaysia... It must be like in Venezuela where roses bloom almost non stop during the year)

Yes, Dot, it is late spring here in Adelaide now. You will be surprised. Some of the roses are already afected with blackspot, although it is much worse in autumn, when rainy conditions are more rampant. I just managed to catch the blooms at the correct time. It is very rainy today and I expect many of the flowers to be damaged already. There are also aphids on many of the buds but they do not pose such a serious threat compaed to when summer approaches.

Ramon, the pics were taken at Adelaide Botanic Gardens, Australia. :)

When I lived in the city, I had about 20 rose bushed in my small yard. They required so much care: black spot, powdery mildew, worms that ate the buds, Japanese Beetles, the thorns! I decided when we moved out here, I wouldn't have roses, although I dearly love them. My husband and I were married in my Mom's rose garden.

Dot -I was like you 15 years ago, at one time I had 4-5 beds with basically nothing but roses & definitely high maintanence. I've been trying these Carefree roses & they really are carefree, I never sprayed once this summer! Japanese beetles are the hardest pest, but at first sign of the beetles, I cut off almost all the flowers & buds, the beetles had nothing to feed on so they moved on .... to someone else's yard/buffet!

I've heard of those, and wondered if they were true to their name. I may have to reconsider as I will have a new are for sun-loving plants. As for the beetles, I pick them off wherever if find them, drop them in a bucket of water and then throw them into our pond where the fish promptly gobble them up!
Thanks, Rose!
