I bought this in bud like this last year.
Once brought home, it went through major bud blasting.

This year, it looks better, although quite a few swollen nodes did give up and stopped developing further.

Also, some of the spikes only have one bud instead of two. :(

They should open vey soon now.
Excited about the flower colors, but rather dreaded about the smell. :p

I'm not good at describing fragrance, but good thing you pointed out acetone. That might be the one that bothers me the most.

That nasty chemical note at the end.
It does have some sweetness mixed in it.
Overall, it's just awful!!!!

It is highly likely that the scent is clone specific.
I got the stinky one. lol

I remember there was a clone 'Sweet Fragrance' and wonder if that one might be any better.

No doubt some Dendrobiums smell awful! I think the fact that each person perceives scents differently plays a part as well. It just so happens I can't abide the smell of Brassavola nodosa or its hybrid 'Little Stars', and I can only just tolerate the scents of many Angraecum species from a good distance. Anacheilium radiatum (Encyclia radiata) starts out smelling wonderful, but over time it becomes decidedly unpleasant.

Despite the odor, I particularly enjoy seeing flowers buds like this which arise directly from the nodes of leafless canes. Orchids can be so fascinating and beautiful, each in their own way.

Agree.
Btw, you are the first person that I know who doesn't like brassavola nodosa scent.
Do you like the fragrance of Neofinetia??

And yes, I love seeding buds develop.
Great joy for me, as long as they don't blast, that is. lol

Buds cracked open last night and during the day, it opened a bit more.
What's interesting and probably I never paid attention last time it bloomed, all the partially opened buds are now fully closed. ???

I took a picture, but photobucket is really giving me a headache, so I'll post some other time.

Very nice... Not sure what you mean but my anosmum flowers partially close in the evening.

This picture was taken on the same day as the photo above.

You see what I mean?

The flowers began to open during the day and then later in the evening, they closed.

They stopped doing this the following day, and the rest of the buds did the same as they opened up, so I guess it is part of the opening process that I never paid attention to. Interesting! :)
