I've been drooling over all the lovely photos and am in a
real quandry. I'm trying to plan my spring Paph. orders and all the gorgeous pics are driving me crazier. I keep
adding/subtracting, agonizing and changing my mind and
it's all your fault! I've got to get control, but y'all keep
posting more beautiful photos. Now stop that! ;)

:) I have finally come to a point where, after killing lots of them, I prefer to look and be happy with those pics!!!! At least for all the 'difficult' ones !!! Jean

I just stopped looking at those I have killed and there's plenty left to look at still.

I find making my shop list very easy.

I prioritise with the following parameters
- Price
- Size of the plant ( how many growths but also how big will a mature plant become)
- How difficult is the culture
- Do I allready have one plant of it
- Do I want it because I love the plant or just because it's missing in my collection.

My own criterias for buying?

1. The plant must adapt and grow well in my conditions;
2. It must be blooming size or near (really) blooming size;
3. If not, it must be an unusual cross and a valuable addition to my collection;
4. The price must match the size of the plant. That is, I will pay very good money (300+) for a flowered division of a first class plant but not if it has only one growth;
5. I won't go beyond my annual budget allowed for orchids, which in my case is no more than $3000.00, which means I must sell one or more less desirable plant(s) if I do, to keep within my budget;
6. I will restrict my buying to only a very few generas so as to stay true to criteria number 1;
7. Have a objective in mind. For me, it's to build the best possible collection of phrags and multifloral paphs I can afford. :)

Interesting. I dont really consider difficulty, nor size, nor if I already have one (with besseae hybrids). If the plant really calls to me I buy it. There are a few besseae crosses I have 2 or 3 of, when they are all blooming I may thin them out. My parameters are more like this:

Hmm .... the root of the problem could be that you haven't fessed up about your addiction - "Terrible indecision and it's all your fault!"
Step 1 - throw out all the other step programs, they don't work for us!
Step 2 - I am an orchid addict
Step 3 - there will always be a list, therefore additions & subtractions will be a part of it.
Some have the list in our mind, depending on your age if it's not written down there may be more subtractions than additions!
Step 4 - If it's available take it while you can get it!

But you have a whole appartment that you can use for growing orchids. I'm limited to the windowsill of the house I live in and I can't be using up all space because then someone else will be unhappy.

I prefer purchase now and regret it later rather than me losing sleep about it and thinking I should have just purchased it.

I am doing the same thing! I think I will lose sleep in a few years when my stonei flask grows up and take over the place!

Better do your research into what you can provide: temperature, light level, and humidity will reduce the number of plants you can actually grow!

Actually, I can grow just about anything in my gh that doesn't require very high light. See, that's the problem!
I want every Paph. I see and my budget ain't all that flexible. Time is the real culprit. The weather is far too cold for shipping and I'm building up lots of anxiety. I have several pre-orders, but that only helps a little bit
right now.

Yeah Ray, you can say that, but I've got several thousand
dollars worth of wish list and an expensive puppy joining
my pack next month! Puppy or Paph. Paph. or puppy.
Hell of a decision! I think more subtracting and PUPPY.

Golden Rose, you are a font of wisdom. I admit the addiction, but I keep adding new orchid addictions. Relax and accept. Goooood thinking.
