Hi guys, I have had some positive feedback in various forums about the ferns in the background of my orchid photos. These are temperate forest tree ferns from Tasmania which is Australia;s most southern state. It is in my opinion the last great wilderness that civilisation has left........anyway the ferns I think are very nice, except they burn once the temperature gets over 100F as you can see.

This one has a kingianum hanging above it.........

Altogether we have 7 tree ferns.

P.S. Sorry I forgot to post the staghorn............we see this from the kitchen window.........it's lovely.

I like ferns, but the ones I grow best in my garden are those taken as small youngsters from a nearby forest :)! Your trees are most impressive!!!! Jean

I have absolutely no idea! I will try and find out for you though.

Those are Dicksonia antarctica. Very cold hardy, in fact the most cold hardy of large trunking ferns, reliably down to -8 C, but below that it gets more risky. This past December in the UK was the coldest in over a century and many D. antarctica died there - very unexpected.

I bet those are pretty cheap over your way Darren. Just for fun, how much do you pay for say one with a meter of clear trunk?

Not 100% sure, these were here when I arrived. You are right with the species name though.

I would say last time I went to a nursery that one metre would be about $20....which I think is about 12 british pounds or just under $20 US.
