    Something wrong with selfings...

I can't identify all of these. Are they both species and hybrids? Did you grow several of each? The reason I ask is that I recently did a selfing of a nice hangianum, and while I am expecting a few duds, I don't want them all to be duds. Mike

    odd weather

I have been mowing regularly for the last month and yesterday it needed it again. Couldn't get started until later in the day, so I was rushing to get it cut before it started snowing. Mike

    First flask- is this mold?

Your flask is contaminated. You will have to pot out the plants. Just rinse them off and they should be fine. Mike

    Red Lightning x Grande

I have seen it reach 100 degrees when we had a warm summer several years ago. If it looks like I will have several days above 90 degrees, I bring the largest Pk inside with the A/C, because I have too many years invested in that plant and the flower is nice. I do leave the smaller ones in the...

    Red Lightning x Grande

Well, I used to grow everything in Promix, but I found out that moss works best for the smallest plants, Orchiata seems to work best for plants in 2 in to 6 inch, but after that things become unpredictable. Wet bark, even Orchiata, doesn't last very long and sometimes when I repot, it is a big...

    Red Lightning x Grande

It decided to take off this year. Currently growing in a nursery pot with Promix. Petals are 32 cm long. Mike

Phrag. Summer Sun 'Fox Valley' AM/AOS

Tom I had one of these bloom a few weeks ago, but it was made with regular besseae. I kind of liked the flower, so I looked up the award info and saw your plant. Yours was larger with wider petals and sepal, definitely a very nice flower. Mike

    Peruflora's Cirila Alca "Peggy" AM/AOS

I have not seen one, but I agree that it should have more purple. The kovachii I used has a broad, flat sepal, so I would like to see that passed along with some size. The oddest thing was that the kovachii pollen looked like it had ruptured and a large glob of waxy material had been extruded...

    Peruflora's Cirila Alca "Peggy" AM/AOS

I got the award in 2015. I use "Peggy" as the clonal name for all of my awarded plants. Mike

    Peruflora's Cirila Alca "Peggy" AM/AOS

Bloom stays like this but the dorsal does pinch up a bit towards the end. Mike

    Peruflora's Cirila Alca "Peggy" AM/AOS

I use next to the smallest size Orchiata. Previously, I used Promix + perlite, but I get better root development in bark. I do not let the pot stand in water, but instead water every 2-3 days. Mike

    Peruflora's Cirila Alca "Peggy" AM/AOS

This is dalessandroi x kovachii. I believe I have posted this before, but it just opened up and looks so nice and fresh this morning. I had a nice kovachii bloom yesterday and I am going to put that pollen onto this flower. The kovachii usually blooms earlier in the year, so I've never had a...

    Paph leaf issues

I'll be honest, that is a lot of damage. Even if they manage to recover, it will be years before they are healthy, robust growers. The only value they have right now is that they might offer clues to what may soon happen to other plants. I believe much of what you see now is secondary...

    First phrag flask

I commented above that Chuck's seedlings were growing at least twice as fast as other kovachii seedlings. Here are photos to support that statement. The compot on the left is "Drumlin Dream x Ken", out of flask September, 2019. These are the smallest plants from that flask. The seedling in...

    First phrag flask

Good luck with the plants. I have this same cross 2 months out of flask and they are growing very well. I think Chuck Acker is absolutely correct in that these latest generation kovachii grow much better than the first ones in the country. I had a compot of those and they were so slow, except...

What is it and how do I kill it?

Many thanks to all involved in this discussion. It prompted me to pull out my 40x binocular scope and examine leaves on a few puny paphs. Low and behold, they were under attack by small red mites, much smaller than could be seen with a good magnifying glass. They didn't even leave a red smear...

    They're coming.... my first flask.

John I can tell you what works for me. I fill a container with slightly warmer than room temperature water and set it next to the sink. I run a thin stream of very slightly warm water from the faucet. I hold the flask inverted over the palm of my hand and tap the bottom with the other hand...

    They're coming.... my first flask.

There is no need to vent the flask. The humidity inside will always be 100%. Sam typically opens the flask and puts in peanuts to protect from mechanical damage during shipment. If so, you need to pot these out in the next day or two, since the flask is no longer sterile. Remove any brown...
