    Phrag Mountain Maid 'Elk #1'

15-5-15 CalMag at 125 PPM N plus urea at 100 PPM N as a constant feed. Once a week or so I do a 600 PPM N urea plus a yucca based surfactant foliar feed in the early morning. High light and high air movement.

    Phrag Mountain Maid 'Elk #1'

Flat, large, "award quality" flowers are not always the most beautiful. This one has been blooming sequentially for almost 4 months now. I love it, which is the most important factor. (besseae v. flavum ‘Golden Rays’ x hirtzii ‘Lucho’) Starts greenish: and then goes to this glowing...

Any ideas as to what this is?

I stand corrected, Ray. I didn't take into account the 46%.

How strong a solution you want to use, I can't say. But about 0.38 grams in 1 gallon of water = 100 PPM N. Volume doesn't work measuring urea as the from factor varies. You have to weigh it.

Note the basicity of the material we use. Our water has very low alkalinity and the hardness that is present is from Mg.

Any ideas as to what this is?

I use a 15-5-15 CalMag at 100 PPM N, with urea added at a strength of 100 PPM N. Total 200 PPM N, constant feed. Water is > 15 PPM TDS. Once a month or so I use plain water for a day or so. I use a watering can to apply Kelpak & Foxfarm Bushdoctor Kangaroots about monthly, more for new...

Any ideas as to what this is?

We use spring water that we pipe in from about 1.25 miles away, with very low TDS - generally less than 15. As you might expect it has low alkalinity, one of the reasons that a 15-5-15 CaMag is one of the components of our program. The pH of the final solution is 6.5 plus or minus 0.1 over...

Any ideas as to what this is?

Here is what Claud AI says when answering this question: This is an interesting question about a somewhat controversial topic in orchid care. To address it, I'll break down a few key points: 1. Historical perspective: Urea has been traditionally viewed as harmful to orchids, primarily due to...

Any ideas as to what this is?

No problem, Ray. You are absolutely right. I have several batches of seedlings growing now at various stages: Phrags, Paphs, Odonts and Cymbidiums. All have shown faster - if not much faster - growth once urea was incorporated into my fertilizer formula. Phrags of all sizes have shown the...

Any ideas as to what this is?

Here is an example of what incorporating urea into our program has achieved. Paph. Dollgoldi grew very slowly if at all for me before urea, as did all of the multifloral primaries. This summer it put on two leaves, three new growths and is wanting to flower. Great foliage color as well...

Any ideas as to what this is?

The Urea Wars. There are certainly lots of different opinions. My Papsh, Phrags, Zygos, Odonts, Disas and Cymbidiums accelerated their growth and flowering when I started incorporating urea into the formula. General vitality, as measured strictly by observation, is way up as well. I now...

Fungus gnats can’t get rid off them

I've found the subspecies israelensis to be the most effective against fungus gnats. Works like a charm.

    Laelia anceps

I've been growing Laelia anceps for over 60 years now, and can't imagine not having them around. Easy to grow, with a few important criteria: First, they cannot ever tolerate soggy roots. I grow them mounted or in baskets with either no media or some very large chunks of tree fern slabs. In...
