I have been waiting 7 years for this seedling to flower. I purchased a small 10cm leaf span seedling 7 years 5 months ago. I really struggled to keep this guy alive, it has suffered a couple of rot setbacks, but at long last I have managed to convince it to grace me with its first bloom. Not the best, not even good, especially considering the effort in trying to convince it to live and grow. Perhaps one more flowering ......?

Stonei is stonei...if you are thinking about throwing it with garbage, just tell it and I give you the right direction and distance to my home.

At least frome this angle it looks pretty good for a first time blooming. (especially after multiple years of abuse).

Flower count is not known to be exceptionally high for stonie, and some of the bigger flowered grexes are known for mild asymetrical twisting of the flower.

This species has done very well for me in baskets and reduced fertilizing. I also have a long term (and unbloomed seedling) that just in the last couple of years has quit the rot syndrome, and is finally putting on some decent leaf and root growth. So if it does this good when it finally blooms I'd be pretty happy.

I think it's lovely! Give it at least another try. I'm sure it will be better next time!

What did you find disappointing?
I'm with the others, not bad considering it's upbringing, I'd hold on to it. Is it a single growth? multiple?

I guess you have to see it in person. It doesn't look too bad in the photos. It doesn't look like it has quite finished opening either. I like that type of stonei dorsal without the striping. First flowering in multi's are generally only a rough guide anyway. They can improve significantly in future flowerings when they reach a big clump.

it's a matter of taste with stonei..i dont think any have received FCC's ..they are small flowers with a not so impressive flower stalk..personally, i prefer some of their hybrids but this one has nice petals ...and be happy that you got it to flower

Isn´t as bad!

This is only the first flowering. Lets see what happens in the next one.

Congrats for your effort and patience.

For a stonei it ain't bad! Let us see the next flowering in... 1,2 ,3 ...seven more years!:poke:

Seriously, it may take 2 years to mature the next growth if it hasn't started one. Keep it on the up swing and it will be 100% better.

I quite like it and don't really know what you're disappointed about. First bloom Paphs never give you their best potential. Definitely bloom it a second time before you decide anything.

Whew! Thanks all, I am not disappointed with having bloomed it at long last, just that it does not match the expected outcome after so many years. Its parents both had white dorsals with no markings (apart from on the rear of course) and the petals were emerald green with very heavy spotting and jet black tips. The contrast was incredible.

I will of course hold onto it and try and flower it again, I just hope it wont be another seven years in the waiting, I don't know if I have the patience for that.

The bloom is as follows
DS 4.8cm
NS 13.5cm
Spike length to first bloom 43cm

Stonei normally have better flowers when they are older. Don't be disappointed, you'd rather be proud that your seedling has a spike ;)
