I don't know what kind of pepper they were, but the hottest I have ever experienced were in a seafood restaurant in Recife Brazil. Little green peppers about the diameter of a pencil and an inch long, soaking in a small bowl of vegetable oil. 3 drops of oil in a giant plate of paella was a killer.

They just keep refilling the oil, and change out the peppers once a year...
