Cattleya wittigiana - small wins

I purchased this as Sophronitis rosea from Ecuagenera. Sophronitis rosea is a synonym for Cattleya wittigiana. It arrived as a tiny plant, and given my track record with coccinea, it did not think it would pull through. So after surviving a couple of years, I am thrilled to see it bloom.



I need to repot it to change the moss but I am terrified

What conditions do you think saved it to thrive and bloom?

Thanks! I am not completely sure, but I think it being under the misters helped. I allow it to dry over the winter but it does not stay dry for very long. It is growing amongst my paph seedlings, so it does not get a ton of light either. I am hopeful it will continue to put on new growths.

Still alive and kicking. This time with 1 flower and one bud. The plant is still tiny.

Looks like it’s more than “kicking”. I love this species. I’m sure you know Peter T Lin’s Diamond Orchids as a source. Alan Koch Gold Country has the as well.

Thanks,@tomp. I have a couple "Sophronitis" from Peter T. Lin, but none from Gold Country. I am not sure what exactly came over me but I bought flasks (coccinea and wittigiana) from Sam last year. So far so good on those also.

yeah... I tend to agree that the tag is questionable. I wish it was not the middle of winter, and I could photograph this one in natural light.

Wittigiana can have flowers that vary from light pink to bright red so the color itself doesn’t say if it is correctly labeled. Also, brevipedunculata is also considered a variety of wittigiana nowadays.
