Cymbidium goeringii "Wang Zi (Chinese variety-green flower) 中國春蘭「汪字」: July 3rd, 2023, after watering. The flower buds are starting to set for the season in July. The new growth is pushed out from the bottom of last year's growth in June, while the flower bud is starting to set in July. Cymbidium goeringii's flower buds are set starting in July (below the soil), It is budding in the middle of the summer. Right now, we are getting temperature around 25C every day for the last few weeks in Toronto, Canada. Yes, they need the heat and humidity to grow well in the growing season. When it is warm (above 25C), you need to cool the plants down. To cool the plants down, from mid June to mid September, only water in the evening and provide 90% shade. These 2 points are the tricks into budding your Cymbidium goeringii. Everything else you see on the internet is nonsense, the cooler temperature in the fall DOES NOT trigger flower bud formation, it is triggered by cooling the plant down in the summer by watering it in the evening only (before mosquitos come out) and by providing 90% shade all day. Of course, to do so, it must be potted correctly in the right potting material called the East Asian Cymbidium potting mix (from Japan). This is just one of the Cymbidium goeringii plants in my collection that have started budding. More will come torwards the end of July. Although the flower buds are starting to set in July, it will take 6-9 months before it blooms next Spring (Spring 2024).
