Funky besseae

This plant gave me two spikes this season, one totally normal and one that took a ride to funky-town. I have seen this before at other nurseries and was always curious what would cause this phenomenon? Oh ya, the flower before this one on the same spike did not have a staminode!

Genetic malformation maybe? Did you drop it on its' head?
Poor baby, it'll do better next time since you know it can.
Show it to your buddy the Springer and see what he says
about it...or maybe he'll eat it and put it out of your misery. I love that big nose dog!
 
I see this happen periodically with ploidy issues in triploid(3N) and tetraploids(4N) plants.
