Cool!

I was gifted one of these a few years back and while I prefer more vibrant colors from Cattleyas, it's a nice big flower and wonderful fragrance.

The newest growth on my plant developed some kind of disease over the summer ... a giant black spot that continued to grow even after I cut it off. Finally, after trying multiple different treatments and cutting away 2/3rds of the leaf, the rot stopped. I assumed I wouldn't see any flowers this year, but a month or two back, a sheath formed and as of today it looks like there may be some buds forming!

Where did you get yours?

Mine came from Orchideen lucke in Germany a few years ago.
It seems to be generally available.
You read in chadwick’s excellent essays on cattleya species about this trait of a second growth if conditions are good and the first one matures in time.
It seems as if this is passed onto some of the hybrids.
I have a large plant of Melody Fair ‘carol’ (probably the best semi alba) and the primary hybrid Adela (trianaei x percivalliana) both doing the same thing.
Both have developing flower buds on the first growth despite having a half mature second growth and should be in flower by Christmas.
I’m hoping the second growths will flower sometime in the spring.
It’s definitely a trait to encourage.
