What the... Is this one of the newly discovered venustums from the other side of the Himalayas? Reportedly very, very red? An ebay seller had these red venustums about a year ago.

Very nice colour. Can you tell me how long the bloom has been open?

Chuck

Hi Chuck.

This bloom opened last 31st-December. The plant has two mature growths and quite good roots so I´ll let the flower stays half and a month or so before cutting the stem off.

Slipperking: I cannot help you to find the origen of this plant. It comes from a french vendor (to whom I buy almost all my Paphs.) and it has not even a clonal name (that´s a pitty, I know).

This P. venustum is really red, so I´ve tried to find some references and the only thing I´ve found is this:

"U.C. Pradhan (1975) illustrated some of the variations to be found in P. venustum and listed but failed to validate the names of several varieties: atratum, bhutanense (as "bhutanensis"), bruneoviride (as "bruneoviridis"), pynurslanum, rubrum and teestaense (as "teestaensis"). Vars. bhutanense, rubrum and teestaense were later validated by him (Pradhan 1979). These vary from the typical variety in the degree of maroon-black spotting of the petals and the intensity of purple coloration in the flower."
Cribb, Phillip J. The Genus Paphiopedilum. 2nd Ed.: 392 (1998)

Maybe the plants described by Pradhan as var. rubrum were similar in colour to this one.

Wow! Spectacular, a very special clone indeed!
I would like to see a further pic of this flower in two weeks again...

Love the colour. That is a great clone. Nice photos too. Did the petals end up reflexing as is typical with this species or did they remain flat?

Hello David:

The petals are now a bit reflexed, yes. The flower has continued opening and changing since I took the photos I posted BUT, certainly, they´re not the most reflexed petals I´ve seen in a P. venustum.

I´ll take new pics so that you can see the petals stance.

Fibre: I´ll do some photos for you too, but you´ll have to remind me to do it or you won´t have your new pics (I´m really forgetful)

venustum isn't my favorite ,but this is marvelous.
the contrast of the green veining on the pink pouch is amazing.
congrats.
