it was fear, mostly. he had been in front of a judge and was doing community service basically on probation, and more in point he wasn't really still a student though he worked for a professor, and if this came to the attention of the authorities he would have had his student visa revoked or whatever and he would have had to go back to india. he did calm down quite a bit and made the best of the opportunity, I believe. also became a local fireman and helped save lives and all that (and hopefully didn't sneak into girls' dorm rooms anymore in the misguided attempt to be overly romantic...)
