The picture this morning. The flower is about 4 inches wide (10cm) and has not fully opened yet. The color is about right except for the pouch which has a yellow reflexion. You'd almost think a besseae flava was used (in the Living Fire parent) for this one. No twist in the petals yet but the staminode looks right for Allison Strohm. The next picture will be of a fully developped flower in natural light. :D

I've never seen a kovachii hybrid with that coloration. What have been the mini/maxi temp in your growing room for the past week ? .. anyway, can't wait for the next pic.. congrats on blooming it! :)

Nights around 18-20°C with days average 25°C. Definitely not as red as expected but it will look fabulous when I post a picture in natural light. I'm just waiting for the plant to reach it's maximum size and for the petals to twist or at least they should.

Your max temp in yur orchid room is already at 25 ?!

In my opinion, all kovachii cross are fabulous, regardless their shape and color. It doesn't look though as if the petals are gonna twist in that " I don't know man" way ..lol
But what do I know, I'm still a newbie at all this :)

Where did you get it from ?

we need to realize also that they're not that many pictures of Allison Strohm out there. Same for many other kovachii hybrids. There are still surprises to come.

Thanks for the ID. I would love to see that Allison Strohm in a better light.
Michael, what is it planted in? Thanks.

All my paphs and phrags and several other plants are growing in Aussie Gold Mix for paphs and phrags.

I think I water to much to use Ozzie Gold w/ Paphs but it should work with Phrags so I will do that; and maybe augment with perlite.:)

You don't need perlite. If you worry about watering too much, put some crock at the bottom of the pot. And you don't even need that if you pot in an Aircone Pot. I have a handful of plants in Aussie Gold that don't do as well as they should. After much obsevation, I've come to the conclusion it is not the mix but the pH that they require. Those plants may have been potted from the beginning in more acid compost like spagnum moss. So I'm now using pH water around 5 to see if they will respond better. As I said in another post, pk hybrids may prefer acid or more basic compost because of the high pH preferred by kovachii. It all depends on the genes received by the hybrids. All but one of my pk hybrids don't mind water with a pH of 6.2, which is what I use for all my other plants.:)

I only bother with pH for plants who don't grow as well as the others or for those who actually require a different pH.
