I had high hopes for an award as it won champion Paph at a local show but was passed over for formal judging as one of the staminodes was crooked.
Maybe next time.....

Outstanding flower! I love it. I think that an AOS award is in this plant's future. Just a friendly tip. If you want the plant to present its absolute best at a show or judging, loose the green spike clips and get some twisties that match the stem color. Cut them in half and wrap the twistie smoothly around the spike and the stake. This way the tie-in between stem and stake is smooth and invisible. I do this with any spike type flower stem that I plan on showing. For your own viewing at home, the clips are fine and easy.

Very nice Stephen. The petals are quite pendulous on this one. Hopefully it an get awarded next time. The plant looks quite small, so it will only get better.

Congratulations on getting Champion Slipper. A good Johanna Burkhardt is always going to be hard to beat.

How many Johanna Burkhardt's do you have? You are always posting them. But as Roy and HG would say, 'Too many Johanna Burkhardt's are barely enough'.

thanks for the tip - Jjari. Interestingly everyone, here, seems to use clips and not tie wire. the judges dont seem to mind but aesthetically wire is nicer.

David, 6-10 big ones and a lot more smaller ones. Its a great hybrid!

The AOC guidelines say an orchid should not be staked above the first flower, although it also says that the judges have the discretion to ignore this for orchids with very tall spikes and heavy flowers. I am not clear on what qualifies for the exemption, maybe a multi-floral Paph. Ideally though, you shouldn't stake all the way to the top of the spike if that is possible. I know the judges here thrown upon it. At our show last weekend I noticed the clips on a couple of my multi-florals had been taken off by the judges. Obviously, they wanted to see how upright the spike held without the clips.

Did you remove the clips beforehand to see if you actually needed them? I find for some of the multi's, that while you need to stake them right to the top to train the flowers in place, once they are set the clips are no longer needed. I had a WBW at our show last weekend that was only staked 20 cm below the first flower. The flowers were still bolt upright. I was told the judges were very impressed by the minimal staking. I only removed the clips on the day of the show.
