Honestly, think jackii is inferior as a hybrid parent to regular malipoense. It has less color, narrower segments, worse form, less attractive leaves (all IMO of course)... I'd self/sib/outcross it since it is awesome as a standalone entity and not very common in collections and retail offerings.

Ernie, I wrote a long comment saying that you are wrong, attached a photo, took a good look at the photo and decided my photo illustrated everything you commented about jackii's weaknesses as a parent. So you got me to think critically & change my opinion.

I do feel jackii hybrids are a little quicker growing, though my experience is limited here. This would mean jackii might be good for hybrids for the 'pot plant' trade. I think most jackii hybrids would be pleasant, but I think for awards it would not be a good choice.

This seedling is an example of all the faults that Ernie was commenting on. Now don't get me wrong, I know Ernie would consider this an attractive flower, and at 12 cm natural spread this seedling did attract attention. But it simply doesn't measure up when considering AOS awards.

Interesting discussion. I don't know about the use of jackii in hybrids, but I don't think baodai's jackii should be used in breeding unless it opens better. Maybe it's not all the way open yet?

I do agree Leo's Armenijack is pretty. Shoot, it's a slipper! :) Compare Leo's Armenijack to Norito Hasegawa. Most might agree NH is overall a better hybrid. Yes, I do certainly like jackii, but if I were shopping and I saw a list of malipoense crosses then the identical crosses remade with jackii, I'd buy the malipoense version arguably every time. If I still had money left, I'd buy the jackii crosses just for novelty.

Dot,
This one hasn't fully open yet, I have more than enough malipoense var jackii and jackii to select some good one.
I agree with Ernie and Leo. It is not the best parent but for our future I'm going to do some self cross
