[Duck Slipper]

This one bloomed with 6 flowers this time. Petal length about 56 cm. I was going to take to judging this past weekend but it was cancelled because of snow!

Wow! 6 flowers on a spike is pretty impressive. I normally don't like philippinense hybrids even though it's one of my favorite species, but this is one of its hybrids that I make an exception for. It turned out so nice.

It’s still a learning trick for me…I was waiting to stake and it really tried to go horizontal. So, I staked it from doing that. It was not trying to go vertical. See what happens next time!

Cut the spike, enjoy it in a vase, groom it for future judging & see if you can get seven. It's good that judging was cancelled; you'd have been dinged several points for that bent spike presentation. Best way I have found is to get a good, long, sturdy stake and bend it into a gentle arch ahead of time, then progressively affix the spike to it as it matures. Good staking vs bad staking can change the score as much as 5 points, and it's 5 points you can control, so why throw them away?

The good news: It's AM quality. Maybe not a high AM (pointy pouch ends, slightly pale color) but an AM nonetheless.

Gorgeous! Too bad about the snow but you would have had a heck of a time packing that beauty to protect those petals from the cold.
