I use a Canon G12 with a flexible lcd screen. This model, I'm told, takes three pictures at the same time and combine them into one electronically to make a sharper image. The shaking is kept to a minimum, and if need be, I'll add filling flash. I usually chose the auto mode setting, but that doesn't always work, then I'll go with a manual setting. I rarely use a tripod.
I have three lamps: two 85 watts CFL (natural white) in front with reflecting parasols, that can be moved closer or farther away depending on the light required, and one much less bright kept lower in the back to make the flower stand out better.
I have several different color backdrops, but I mostly use black and white, depending on the color of the flower. Colored backdrops are trickier because they may alter the color of the flower. So sometimes they work and sometimes they don't.
I always take several pictures at the highest possible resolution.
Next, I use a program that came with my Canon to crop and sharpen the image a bit more, then use brightness and contrast levels to get the color as much of a match as possible to the real one.
If I'm not satisfied with the results, I go back and take more pictures until I get the right one.

I am really beginning to like this species. Yours looks great. Do you grow it in any special way? I recently flowered one after 7 years of failure. I think that it was the cooler temperatures that mattered for me, but I'm not sure.
Yes! My plant won't initiate a flower bud if the temperature at night won't drop around 10°C or below. Once the spike is well on its way, I put it where temps go down to 15°C at night. I put it near the window pane when the weather gets cold and that does the trick.

I like the flower, also. But I think the photo looks over-sharpened -- makes it look like a Photoshop (or other image-processing software) filter was used on it. Not that that is bad -- I like playing with filters, myself.
Shiva, I really enjoy your creative photography. It's certainly not the same

Not really Rick. I think the cold is mostly responsible for the dark shade of the petals.

Dot, I'm very myopic. So sharpness in photos is my revenge for seeing less well the rest of the time.
