I don't know about this clone in particular, but yes, I've heard that a lot of modern yellow primulinums are in fact hybrids. I'll also point out that, in my experience, this species is fragrant. A lot of the newer primulinums (or possibly hybrids) are larger growing with much larger non-fragrant flowers.
Anyway, this clone looks fairly petite, more in line with the old school primulinums than the newer ones. If it's fragrant, then I'd be more certain about the ID. Unfortunately, the scent can be pretty faint, and it's one that some folks can't detect.
