RB1672 Phalaenopsis Mannosa (mannii 'Shaffer's' x venosa 'El Dorado')

I made this cross in 2006. Been growing them in an unheated greenhouse with temps into the low 30's. Get cold tolerance from mannii.

This plant has three basal keikis and 4 new flower spikes. Picture is of new flowers on last year's spike.

Very nice!

This is pleasantly flat, unlike the one I used to grow which was pretty mannii-heavy.

Lovely.

I didn't know mannii is cold-tolerant.

Can be. Took a couple years to get them from 50-degree nights down into the 30's. Lost the large mother plant because it still had 62-degree leaves. That part of the plant just dies; like you expect it might. Smaller plants actually adapt better. Yes, some attrition, but the ones that make it are surprisingly cold-tolerant. I grow in NZS in terra cotta on the dry side during the winter. Mannii also develops good yellow pigment at lower temps than amboinensis or venosa.
