how does the color and size of this compare to a pure besseae? I like this a lot, and the color seems less orangy red than the photo of your "Carlisle" Besseae, or is it just differences in the monitor or photo skewing the color?

Phrag Jason Fischer is a lot more red than besseae. Phrag besseae is an orange-red. Jason Fischer is RED! Jason Fischer is quite a bit bigger too. Unfortunately, the photos of both are a couple weeks old now and the flowers have dropped. So, I can't do a comparison photo with the two plants side by side with the same flowers. However, I'd estimate that Jason Fischer is about 25% larger; maybe more.

Also, Jason Fischer is less prone to problems. I don't get as much leaf spotting or Erwinia problems in Jason Fischer (or any of the besseae hybrids), than I do in pure besseae.

Hi, I'm new to the forum - what is CHC that you refer to as a growing medium?
Beautiful flower.

Hi Tracey,

Welcome to SlipperTalk! "CHC" is Coconut Husk Chips. It's widely used in place of bark these days. Some people like me like it and some others still prefer bark. If you're not a copious waterer, the CHC can absorb fertilizer salts and allow them to build up to toxic levels. So, if you use it, make sure that you flush your pots really well at least once a month with clear water.
