Phragmipedium `Rio Mira´

Half a year ago I ordered two Phragmipedium `Rio Mira´ (longifolium x hirtzii) from Ecuagenera and got these two. At first I still believed in the spread within these hybrids. I have two completely different plants in front of me and rather believe that the one on the left is a phrag. `Green Hornet´ (longifolium x pearcei). Do any of you have Phrag. `Green Hornet´ and can confirm that?

While you might be correct about them being different crosses, they might not be, as sexually-produced siblings can look entirely different, in both vegetative growth and flowers.

The plant on the right is now blooming for the second time. It bloomed for the first time from August 2022 to August 2023 and produced a total of 18 flowers. Let's see how many there will be this time. The plant on the left hasn't bloomed yet.

While the plant on the right (see above) has been blooming continuously for more than two years, the plant on the left has finally started to bloom. Both are Rio Mira. While one has the characteristics of longifolium, the other has a clear tendency towards hirtzii.

Unless Rio Mira is a mericlone, some progeny will look like one parent, some will favor the other parent.
Since they can not mericlone slippers, the progeny are capable of looking quite different.

Funny. I’d call that a lucky happenstance…. You get to either have 2 different (but to me fun) variations. Or pick the growth habit you prefer and ditch the other….

Sometimes when i’m buying seedlings I’ll just pick what I think are ‘the best’. And then add a few that look totally different. .
