so, this was my first flask of roths i bought back in dec 2008...they were setback when i gave them too much light right out of flask...a BIG NO NO apparently...but they recovered well, growing in 6 inch diameter pot and these arent the biggest , i accidentally sold the biggest online a few months ago..:(

this is spider x atticus (sam sold these to me at half price because of contamination, but, actually,i lost half of them in shipment to breakage). the roots were short and plants were shaken around , came loose...but this is growth after 16 months..not bad considering they were pretty gnarly looking and no bigger than a half inch. top pot is 6 inch, bottom pot is 4 inch pot

Growing roth. seedlings takes time..., and I (myself) prefere sanderianums, just because they are faster (which really is a daft reason).
Love your plants anyway, they're looking great.

interesting you say that and you would be the first i have ever heard say that (curious to know how you grow them)...i grow them both, well i only have one compot of sanderianum...they are the slowest things on earth (but it was supposedly one of the last flasks sam received from his lab (that he sold, anyway), so they are probably runts) my adult plants of roth and sanderianum seem to grow at about the same rate...most of the compots of roths i have outgrow pretty much everything i have except for the parishii and berenice album compots..i guess the impression i was trying to give is that once they recovered they are growing really fast

Excellent job of recovery!
What media did you use when they first came out of flask and what did you do to facilitate the recovery?
Thanks for sharing.

just coconut husk...i am not sure the media really matters so much just as long as they are allowed to dry out more than the adults (but with high humidity and warm temps 65 minimum) and low light until they toughen up..one of the interesting things and some people may differ in opinion, is that i just left them in their agar ..i think this also set them back because the next 6 roth flasks i received i washed off the agar and separated the plants..those grew really well. Once i washed off the agar and separated out the gig x perf seedlings, they seemed to be 'happier' but they needed to recover. I have had this experience with other multiflorals too, i think they just neeed more water than what they can get if they are left in the agar But everything else that comes in flask doesnt seem to want to have the roots disturbed at all (especially parvis and brachys)

with the spider x atticus i just placed in a compot and prayed, i have three other pod x atticus compots of different pod parents..two of them are growing slow and the other is growing at a medium rate...personally i think atticus isnt that great of a breeder with regard to growth rates..perhaps spider is much better with vitality and is influencing the growth more

hmmmm, that's weird!!! Might well be my culture. I have some sanderianum (no longer com. pot) in individual pots now, underfloor heating (24/7) during the cold season plus pointing a misting-nozzle right at them,... and: I have been growing them in rather high light (since the light picked up), HQI during the winter, in adition to my normal feeding program even the seedlings get a little slow release Osmocot-Type fertiliser as well...
I'll take a few pictures tomorrow.

HQI?

That's great. I'll have to post some pics of my roth seedlings from flask. i must have grown 7 flasks worth of roths by now. So these days i am not buying flasks (or a lot of orchids at all) b/c i am still concerned about where the heck I am going to bloom them all out. I am thinking about doing a whole grow-room with a light hanging from the ceiling.

I think roths grow fast out of flask, but once they get to seedling stage that's when they seem to take forever. But I grow on the cool side...if i could only grow them warmer I'm sure they would be faster.

I have defintely noticed them growing slower since I moved them into the garage where it stayed cooler.....I have them in greenhouse now but I have to figure out how to keep them warmer in the winter.did wonders for the adult plants..they bloomed like crazy

but i have often wondered that perhaps its an adaptation modality that 'certain' species acquired for greater chances of survival ...growing fast until they reach a certain size...i havent studied any natural habits so i wouldnt know...just mild curiosity

Nice ssedlings.

In my growing conditions, rothschildianum with Osmocote is faster than sanderianum.
I have roth. seedlings from 2007 flasks thaht would bloom in 2012 for at least one plant.

I'm impatient!!!

all this to me suggests that I need to get a few roth. flasks, and try aigain. You guys clearly seem to have other data, than what I believed to be universally standart (sanderianum being quicker (much quicker) than roths. out of flask).

Beautiful seedlings! I find that they grow quite fast! My seedling roths are growing in a mixture of coconut husk and sphagnum moss. I use to grow alot of Paph rothschildianum from flask but sold alot of them because they take up alot of space.

I'd like to show you two different sanderianum clones from my collection. They are both 7 years out of flask, but see how different plants can be even if they are from the same species:

Obviously they have not bloomed yet, so it's possible that the "dwarf" has other qualities...

Interesting! Are they from the same flask?

Except, the leaves are also really differents.
