Nor do you have to. It's your plant and you can call it anything you want to. This one seems a bit unusual to me.
Most of the ones I've seen are more crimson than Chinese
red and I've never noticed the purple before.

That's very beautiful, Dot. Bravo!

Angela, what you're describing seems to be Sophronitis coccinea. That's the species with the crimson colour and without the purple. This species, Sophronitis cernua, is normally a sort of Chinese red with the purple, too. But, it also comes in a pure, buttercup yellow as well. Flowers last only a week or so if you water them. They'll last much longer if you keep the flowers dry during blooming. Angela, if you ever get one, remember to grow it with your Phals, not your cold, high light orchids. It likes intermediat/warm temps and low to medium light intensity.

Heavenly!

(If we can, and always have done, distinguish groups of plants by macroscopic means and defined characteristics , this method seems to me more accurate and sensitive than others. For me it still is Sophronitis, as mexican Laelias to me and others have been distinct from brasilian Laelias, too!)

That is one seriously well grown plant, which is no surprise from you, Dot. Just gorgeous.

This species was the definition of Sophronitis, and it will never be truly wrong to call it that, with the full citation implied, no matter what the current fashion is. The big problem comes up with what else you want to include in Sophronitis, or not.

That's awesome Dot! I need one of these again....they don't take up much room so I can fit one in easily.

What a beautifully grown and flowered plant.
Any tips, Dot?
Pretty much what John said. I grow it warm in the summer and intermediate in the cooler, darker months. It grows facing north, so it doesn't get direct sun.

That's why I have two. :)

Thanks, everyone.

Eric no plant can be considered easy --as you have probably found out over the years!!
Your plant is a real beauty Dot just like the other plants you let us see.
