went native orchid hunting yesterday with ken hull, hoping to see a white lesser purple fringed orchid or two. went up on tug hill for a little while and saw tons of purple, pink and lilac, and maybe a plant that in a week might have white flowers. also found club spur and platanthera dilatata, the latter which was much behind the populations anywhere else in upstate ny including over in the adirondacks. after squishing around the moss a bit, we headed over to west canada creek and harvey bridge (after stopping at ward's drive in for ice cream ), where the water was very high. before trying to find another way to the orchid spot across another nearby creek, we spotted a very nice patch of very red canada lilies! usually in central ny they are a yellowish orange color, but I guess in northern ny they get fairly red (according to ken). canada lilies over near Ithaca, ny are long gone, but here they are nearing their prime.
after finding a way across a feeder stream into w.c.c., we hiked over to the area along the creek where the orchids usually are, and much of them were under water! there were a few above the waterline or sticking up out of the water, but many were under water. I spotted a few, and decided to try getting some pics of submerged orchids
pics are split up for easier viewing
last week I posted pics of orchids growing next to the boulders roiling this water
