Anyone Know if These are Registered yet?

The first is Acker’s Starshoot, registered 2021 by Acker’s.

Cattleya Bob Betts awards and cultivars

And most collectors must hope for the “clean” mericloning technique to make some of these fantastic orchids available. The difficulty mericloning Paphs and Phrags is a problem here, but an increasing number of outstanding Cattleyas are appearing as clean mericlones from some vendors. They won’t...

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

It has been a decent grower so I will keep it for another cycle and see the result.

Cattleya Bob Betts awards and cultivars

There is a small group of excellent growers who are trying to care for these heirloom Cattleyas. I sense that these plants are sometimes like works of art.

Cattleya Bob Betts awards and cultivars

Your story nicely tells why and how it has been so difficult to keep many of the great, heritage Cattleyas in cultivation. Life happens to growers, virus creeps in, tags jump around, plants change hands and have to be shipped. This is not an easy or cheap hobby.

That is a great Bow Bells.

Do you have your own pictures of those two parents?

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

The shape of those three flowers is outstanding. I know there could be a preference for the original very open shape seen with most wild-collected plants, but my limited space collection has to favor the more round, closed form. I need the courage to replace old plants with new.

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

I will watch another cycle or two to see how much the petals improve, but I can't see it moving to 'Cashen's' petals.

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

I was surprised this bloomed now when none of my other trianae plants show any bud rise. I agree that the problem is the petals. My 'Cashen's' selfing has good size and pronounced flamea pattern, but the petals are not as full as 'Cashen's'. As I noted above, many selfing crosses of unique...

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

I suspect there will be few to no plants that can match the coloration of ‘Hernando Garcia’. There are at least 11 different genes influencing carotenoids in Cattleya and 4 different anthocyanin genes. ‘Hernando Garcia’ would be very dependent on all 4 of the anthocyanin genes firing and as soon...

Cattleya trianae ('Hernando Garcia' x 'Cashen's')

This is the first bloom of my plant from an Orchids Limited cross. The horizontal dimension of the flower is about 13.0 cm. Cattleya trianae ‘Hernando Garcia’ is a sangre de toro-type, which usually translates as “blood of the bull,” indicating its darker rubra color than the typical trianae...

    Cattleya warneri ‘graue’

David, have you had the plant long enough to know how it checks the boxes for rooting after flowering? Are the growths shorter than your labiata plants? Ever a double sheath? It is a beautiful flower.

Phrag Lovely Lynne 4n x sib blooming thread

Everything with orchid nutrition is controversial. Some claim the pH of solutions applied to the root zone or the leaves doesn’t matter; others claim it does. A pH meter is a reasonable expense compared to the cost of one good Cattleya. I am using 6 different solutions in rotation and they vary...

Phrag Lovely Lynne 4n x sib blooming thread

I had hoped to as well, but I was surprised when I tested and saw how acidic or alkaline some of my solutions were when made in 100% RO.

Phrag Lovely Lynne 4n x sib blooming thread

I am also exploring an increase (and variation) in various nutrients. So much is uncertain and I am hedging on everything. Controversial like many things, I am adjusting the pH of my solutions. I decided to target about 6.0 for solutions that go primarily to the root zone. For solutions that...

Phrag. besseae flavum ‘Broadwaters’ x self

The second flower got the better genes from the selfing! Better color and configuration. The leaves are also wider. In my space-limited situation I would only be able to keep that second one. You are growing them well.

    Cattleya Fabia (1894) double sheath

The primary hybrid Cattleya Fabia was registered in 1894 as (dowiana x labiata). Another Cattleya Fabia was mistakenly registered in 1921 as (Atreus x Fabia). There was one 1964 HCC AOS award for Fabia (1894), but OrchidPro has no other information. A few online pictures indicate that Fabia...

    Cattleya gaskelliana alba

David, my only gaskelliana is just getting to blooming size, so I have not personally seen one. How open, or “flat” does this become? The flower on the left must be the first to open and the dorsal sepal has gone vertical and the petals look to be flatter than the flower on the right.

    C. Adela (1898) syn. Louis Chaton (C. percivaliana x C. trianae)

The genes have their own dance and we can’t predict what will come out. That is the adventure and the excitement. It would be fun if you could get both plants in sync and see the blooms side by side.
