The first one I bought it as a seedling last summer. It was supposed to be var alba. The leaves have no red in them but no luck. This plant sort of mutated or something because of coarse the flower and it has shot up 6 new growths and 3 are big enough to flower. It looks funky but it has grown on me. The second one is Paph venustum x self that I bought from parkside last fall.

WOW WOW WOW on that second one!! Intense color, you got a darn good one there!! The first has a few issue to resolve:(

Second one is very nice but first one is very interesting plant....put second one pollen on first one and hope to breed something new.......

The second one is quite nice. But I wonder, is the first one really a venustum???

I agree Dot. The first one is obviously related to venustum; but, it's got the wrong shape and colour. It has no large spots on the petals and the foliage is not right for pure venustum. However, the second one is wonderful!

Mick, does the second one have a clonal name? It is nice enough that it should.

Repeating whats already been said, but that second one is great! Saw a few beauties at a show this afternoon and this one would easily rival them. Great job!

Thanks everyone. I really like how the pouch came out all red on the second one. I think I got lucky on this one.

Oooo, I envy you that second venustum and those damn blue California skies and green grass and palm trees and :sob:
Thanks, I took those view shots for everyone who is freezing in the middle of feburary.

Hi Dot. Im guessing. maybe it was my culture that caused the dorsal to be so small, mutated because it was growing so fast. It was supposed to be a alba, so they do not have spots. It looks to me like it wanted to be a alba but it didnt happen. I think its hard to get a alba unless its a division. Im new, so like I said Im guessing.

Thanks John. On the tag it just says Paph venustum x self. I got it from parkside orchids, So I will try to call them on Mon. to see if they know the clonal name.
If not. Can I give it one? I dont know how that works.

That is the best and worst venustums I have seen. I have never seen a better coloured one than the 2nd. Nice form as well and looks a good size.

Since the tag says "Paph. venustum x self", that indicates that it was seed grown and is a genetically unique individual plant. If Parkside had made a division of one of their plants that had a clonal name, they would've written the tag to look like this: "Paph. venustum 'clonal name'".

Since it appears to be an unnamed clone, you can name it. You simply choose the name you like and add it after "venustum"; but, you enclose it in single quotation marks. So, if you named it after yourself, it would be called this: Paph. venustum 'Mick'. 'Hope this helps.

Yep, just like John says. And I agree it deserves a clonal name if it doesn't already have one. Truly a winner!

Do the leaves of the first one look like straight venustum leaves?
The pattern is supposed to be pretty unique as I recall. How does it compare to your confirmed venustum?

I second this without any restrictions, preconditioned the first one is a straight venustum.
I'm green with envy for your blue sky, the sunshine, the......:D:D

Best regards from Germany, rudolf

I think Rick H might be on to something! That would account for the 'alba' leaves and the flower along with mutation/a bad blooming. The second one really is stellar though....Soooooo jealous! Consider that disaster of a bloom on the first plant the price you pay to get so lucky on the second one :)

McPaph,

This species has several variations, slight to marked, but they all have greatly reflexed petal tips.

The flowers pictured appear to me to be hybrids and/or they were not allowed to fully expand.
