3 out of 5 spikes are open! (On 2 different plants!)

Psychopsis papilio 1st time bloom with 2 spikes!

and my faithful Mendenhall 'Monarch' AM/AOS has put forth a 3rd spike!

I love the faces! What does the profile look like to you? And the straight on shot?

Those are awesome - love their little faces. Just like the one in your avatar. :D Hilariously, when I first came on to this forum, I didn't realize that your avatar was actually a flower; I thought it was a little cartoon guy with a tall hat and a moustache. :rollhappy:

Do they swarm? Yes, unfortunately. Especially at a show. (These things are a ***** to deal with in a display - I'm sorry - I love them, but I cringe when I see them coming in the door.)

Sorry, that was a bit negative. They do look insect-like, and I love them on their own and they can be very good at a show as long as you receive and can place them early in the day. :)

What a show Rose!!!! That faces always remind me of a Teddy bear's face! :) (I was 7 was I had this stuffed pet, more than half a century ago:eek::eek:)
Thanks for the picts. Jean

Awesome pictures, this is the first time that I've seen the two different plants side by side. Both are really cool.

I have a seedling called Psychopsis Mariposa ‘Green Valley’ that has been flowering on it's first spike over the last few months. Unfortunately it's pretty tricky to photograph too, maybe I'll try again when the next bud opens. My sister has another one called Oncidium Mendenhall ‘Hildos’ AM/AOS, which has red blotches on the leaves and it's really slow growing, still hasn't spiked....

Btw, how old are they?

The photos don't show off the differences as much as I'd like. The Mendenhall I bought in double spike a year ago, so it's been blooming on & off all year & threw the 3rd spike this year. This flower has richer color & a sparkly finish to the flower. The papilio flower has a flat finish so the colors don't seem as rich.
Size/age - Feb.'07 I got that little papilio guy - 3 bulbs in a 2" pot. It grows like a weed & has doubled in size & growths! Mendenhall is in a 4" pot, has 3 bulbs & 2 big leaves & is nothing to look at. Both are in sphagnum, that's the way I got them so I didn't change anything other than pot size. Papilio is in a clay pot, as was Mendenhall but it got knocked over, fell off the bench & the pot broke so I slipped it in a plastic basket! Surprisingly none of the spikes broke!

Paphioboy -I did kill one many years back & it was in a bark mix & overwatered. I typically don't like sphagnum but these guys do so well in it for me, they have been easy, I'm leaving them be - don't mess with success!

Thanks for looking & all the nice comments!
