First blooming from Shen Liu Orchids. Great yellows on this one.

awesome flower but plant looks stressed. hope you can grow it on.

I know, a week before the first flower opened, I lost two bottom leaves to soft tissue rot  I have never had an issue with this and a few friends that got the same plant in the group order have had the same issue :( I have cut the spike and am babying the plant. It has a strong new growth and good roots so fingers crossed.

Lovely yellow.
I'd cut the flower.
Is that cinnamon around the plant's base?
Flower was cut the moment I took the picture! Yes, cinnamon at the base because of the two leaves I had to cut off :(

I didn't think they flowered so small. Have you had it long?
I have had it for over year, the biggest leaf is over 12 inches, the way the photo was taken makes it look smaller :)

It does have nice yellow tones. Cut the spike as suggested.
Spike cut!

That's a very nice flower.

I don't mean to step on anyone's toes with this statement but what's the point in cutting off the spike at this age? The plant has likely spent more energy producing the spike than it will sustaining The flowers. If the plants health is truly a question and wouldn't be logical to cut the spike off while still in sheath?

Thanks for sharing. Luckily they bloom on small plants. I had one plant, out of 10 in my order from Shen Liu, with the same issue, . Otherwise really good plants at good prices. i cut off the bad leaves and put a little Dragon's Blood and Captan powder. It has one small growth and hopefully will come back strong.

Love the yellow colour.

I tend to agree with you. Most of the energy would be put into producing the flowers. If a plant isn't strong enough to sustain the flowers, it shouldn't be allowed to develop them in the first place. It can be tough when that may mean having to wait another three years or so to see it flower again.

Agree. I would have made the gut wretching decision to pinch the bud.
But, gee its nice!

This all makes sense but the decision to let it bloom was made. The deed is done, cutting the spike now will still benefit the plant. My thinking you will prevent the lost of anymore energy, movement of water, nutrients etc up the flower stem and a hormonal shift should occur from bloom mode to growth mod. Continue watering with Aspirin water to evoke a immune response to facilitate recovery.

I got one of the red leaf type for almost 4 years. Never bloomed before. I hope it will do it for me this year.
