... from oak hill gardens in illinois. the flowers are fairly large and deeply-colored, but I couldn't detect any fragrance :( . I have four or so schillerianas now, and I'm hoping that one will be fragrant and look like a 'normal' schilleriana. I like more of the natural look than the 'improved' versions of species flowers. this may be a tetraploid which could be what makes the flowers larger and darker than usual. ... is it me, or should the lip for a standard schilleriana be a fair amount larger/longer than what is seen in these flowers? (just noticing that) they are nice enough in their own way. the flowers were still opening a bit, and my landlord had done some painting in the living room so they were looking a little cuppy (didn't know if the paint fumes were hurting the flowers at all) but they may be flattening out a bit, now

had to get creative to find a way to display the plant/flowers properly.
I tipped the pot sideways underneath my lights, so that the flower spike
wouldn't grow up into the tubes and as a result the flowers and spike are
at an odd angle to the rest of the plant :)

I did damage one flower the other day when I pulled the plant out of my plant stand (sigh)

Nice color saturation!

As for the lip, looks about right to me.

Try sniffing it in the middle of the night. I always thought my antique clone was not fragrant until I had occasion to open the small growroom four years ago. I smelled something really delicious and finally tracked it down to that plant, much to my surprise.

(!) middle of the night; i'll have to check that out. .. and the actual saturation of the flowers is a deeper pink than is shown in the photos. when I've tried to get the saturation right on colors like this, the sharp details seem to blah together and look over done

actually, after looking at the flowers and then looking back at the pictures one more time, I realized that I edited them to be a bit too 'blue'... they are a deeper pink than in the photos

I think those are very nice flowers Charles. Nice and round.

I have a big one that is in spike now (later than usual) and the buds are just starting to develop. I've posted some pics on previous bloomings, and I think its pretty close to a "wild type" plant. Big lip with lots of gap between the petals. Not show quality, but its a good show, and fragrant.

Its fragrant in the middle of the day, but the humidity and light level has to be up high for it to go off. I've never got much fragrance on a chilly cloudy day only sunny warm and muggy days, which are not that common during the usual time for this plant to bloom for me.

This one is really lovely. Mine agrees with Rick and is fragrant when warm and the lights are on. It smells just like roses :smitten:.

maybe I just need clear sinuses and all to be able to smell better! I think this is it's first flowering (maybe second...), with better heat and feeding it would probably do better
