Picked this one up from Marilyn Ledoux, at Windy Hill. It is the first bloom for me, the plant was awarded some years ago. The classic 'original orange' 2N besseae. For some reason I did not get the background lighting right, so the color looks washed out. I didn't take the time to try to fix it. I'll retake pictures on the next blooming.

Very nice Leo. I think any collection of phrags should have many besseaes. They simply are adorable.

Absolute beautiful flower, what conditions are you growing it in?

I haven't had this plant very long. I bought it in bud from Marilyn. I put it with the rest of my besseae and kovachii in the light garden. It is under a 400 watt high preasure soduim lamp. In the basement, so temps run about 60 to 75 F, depending on how cold the wind is blowing. I water every 3 to 5 days. I keep it in an individual shallow saucer of water at all times. Right now it is in a bark mix, I will probably move it to sphagnum, at which time I will get rid of the saucer of water. Fans keep the air moving. Basically a primative set up. 14 hour of light daily. It will be interesting to see how the color changes as it adapts to my conditions.

Nice orange. Too bad we don't see/ have more

Perhaps I'll get my toothpick out, and get busy. :D The original type orange besseae have a vivid flourescence in daylight that some of the line bred ones lack. I also am thinking about what to do with those seedling kovachii, that I hope are getting closer to blooming. Perhaps next year?

thanks for the cultural information. Marilyn has wonderful phrags! Way back when I was growing and selling phrags I found that phrags loved the 70's . I used bottom heat at 72 and grew seedlings close fluorescent fixtures. Most of them grew like weeds. Sadly phrags do not like the 40's & 50's of my greenhouse.

This one is for Dot, after a year of doing manual white balance on the camera, I noticed the last preset on the second page of the white balance menu is a preset for "Flash"

Here is the result for comparison. I think fairly true for color, a little over bright, but not as washed out as previous attempts with flash.

That's interesting, Leo. I don't think I have that setting on my cameras, but I do know that I have to change the white balance setting when I use flash, or the colors are terrible!

I don't think about this much, though, because I only use natural light when I shoot flowers. About the only time I use flash is taking pictures of people at society meetings where the light is too low otherwise.

I'm glad you found that setting -- it should help a lot!
