(Fox Valley Fireball x kovachii) - We only have four clones of this hybrid and this one is the best of the lot. May do a (x fischeri) or (x Barbara Le Ann) with it. We have one pod of Phrag. MDA (x besseae) in the lab, but no germination yet. Fingers crossed....

Very nice! I didn't think Fox Valley Fireball was very fertile but I guess you got at least four seedlings crossing it with kovachii.

Dot,

When you're dealing with diploid Phrag. hybridization, each succeeding generation of complexity results in fewer seedlings. If they were all tetraploids it might be a different story.

Will we see you at the Chicagoland Orchidfest this year?

Tom

That's lovely. Does the lack of fertility characteristic get passed down through generations?

With all the polyploids being back crossed to diploids Phrag breeding is turning out similar to what happened to Phalaenopsis. They look nice, but breeding them is a very big issue.

Here's a photo of the third one to bloom for us. I'm pleased with the "splash petal" effect, where the distal petal tips are a darker color than the proximal petals.
