I'm confused! Is Paph anitum considered a species or a variety of Paph adductum? I see roth x anitum is Paphiopedilum Wössner Black Wings but roth x adductum is Paph Johanna Burkhardt. What really has me confused it that RHS does not have anitum as a species but does have Paphiopedilum Wössner Black Wings registered as roth x anitum?????

Exciting watching it open I bet!! Looking nice!!!

Depends who you ask.
Many consider them to be 2 separate species. Some consider anitum a variety of adductum. The confusion now comes when they are used for hybridisation.......as you've found.

That is for sure and even RHS didn't doesn't know. How can they accept a registration for a cross with a species that they haven't accepted to be a species :rollhappy:

There it is:

Stunning. Gee I love this hybrid. So much so I just ordered a flask. It will many years before I will see a flower though.

I don't think there are any taxonomists saying they are separate species. It is more a horticultural construct.

That is strange isn't it. I think anitum is generally now considered by just about everyone to be just a variety of adductum but is considered separate when it comes to hybridising. In some respects I don't have a problem with it as you really do want to be able to diffentiate between adductum and anitum when it comes to hybridising.
