Interesting how much lighter in color it is than the pictures online, where Carter & Holmes posted their bloom of an overall much darker and solid red flower. Looks like that picture was posted in June. Warmer temps really saturate the red compared to my dead of winter bloom. May also be something else in the culture?

I’ve noticed this with other phrags, slightly muted colors with cooler conditions. I need to try and avoid blooming them in the winter.

Oh, Phrag color and lighting.

Pete has shown us his great LED indoor lighting setup. There is no standardized light for orchid color determination (or photography). Sunlight spectrum varies throughout the day as the sun moves, and observed (and photographed) flower color can vary.

I have only one Phrag. Jason Fischer, a cross between two confirmed tetraploid parents (Memoria Dick Clements ‘Rocket Flash’ x besseae ‘Rob’s Choice’ AM/AOS). While my plant might be tetraploid, it isn’t guaranteed. Orchids Limited was awarded a 93-point FCC for a plant from this cross in January 2020, with a 10.5 cm horizontal natural spread. The indoor award photo is shown in the following link:

My plant from the cross has become two healthy plants through division. I have had seven flowerings between the plants but have never had a horizontal spread greater than 9.0 cm. Here is a picture of a flower taken outside at the beginning of September 2024 in morning indirect sunlight.

Next is a picture with the same camera of a current flower against a black background in my plant room under an LED panel set for 5000K color temperature.

I believe there are subtle differences in petal configuration between the two flowers, but the color hues are noticeably different to me. Lighting and backgrounds influence the colors we perceive both directly and in photos.

Lovely Terry! I'd be happy to see how it does in my conditions ;)

I picked up a division of one of Hadley's awarded Jason Fischers from Woodstream at the VOS show last year. It was not in bloom then, but is starting to spike now. When it blooms, I'll post a comparative photo. I wonder how much growing under lights vs. a greenhouse affects color? Certainly winter blooms in MN vs. NC or VA in a greenhouse would have different conditions to some degree.

Can’t wait to see!

Not sure I can. I’ve already started experimenting with keeping things a bit warmer this winter with slightly higher levels of fert than I typically target this time of year.. everything is growing, vandas are putting out big roots and I’ve noticed a dip in flowering plants. But Next weeks forecast looks brutally 🥶 cold

I find the opposite with color. Mine Phrags colors are richer in the cooler winter and much lighter in the summer, especially besseae.

Regardless, your Jason Fischer is lovely.
Interesting, it very well could be my culture and I’m just jumping to conclusions. Might just need another cycle to fully adapt to the media and my conditions. I’ll keep an eye on it.
